She also spent several summers touring with Shachah company, dancing and choreographing in Japan and Indonesia. From 2010-2019 Hagelin enjoyed dancing, choreographing and directing for Ballet Bellevue/City Opera Ballet, working with Mary Ellen Hundley, Jennifer Porter and company members. Some of her favorite times were performing at Meydenbauer Center in ballets and roles such as Fairy of the Enchanted Garden in The Sleeping Beauty, Kissing Ballerina Doll and Snow Queen in The Nutcracker with the company, and also co-directing contemporary shows with Jennifer Porter.

Hagelin also co-directed, wrote plays, taught classes, choreographed dances and held title Musical Choir Director with Taproot Theatre and Sky Valley Education Center’s Theatre Department.  Some of these shows include 8 full-length musical theatre shows such as Thoroughly Modern Millie, Beauty and the Beast, Sound of Music and The King and I.

From 2008-2012 Hagelin created and headed the Sky Valley Education Center’s Dance Department and taught all dance and PE classes for the school district. She also founded her own ‘After School Dance Program’ teaching her own ballet and modern dance classes and produced recital shows for the students each year. She carried title of Ballet Mistress at Monroe Dance School and taught and guested for various dance schools including Dance Premier Issaquah.

In the past years, she also witnessed various performances dancing and choreographing for her own 501©3 non-profit company KATY HAGELIN dance project (KHDP) founded in October 2008, receiving continuous high praise reviews from the Seattle Dances and Seattle Weekly. These shows include KHDP's Underneath Fresh (2009), Vision Outreach Tour (2009), Dar a La Luz (2010), fromPhantastes (2010), Yelp's Booth Festival with Fremont Abbey & Karin Stevens Dance (2009), Ballet Bellevue’s Harvest Moonlight (2010), Fremont Abbey's A Moving Conversation (2011), Ballet Bellevue’s Velvet Romance (2011), Fremont Abbey's THREADS (2011), KHDP's Purple Triangle Purple Dagger (2011), Project29's Ode to Exhalation And A Spark (2012), KHDP Summer Works Show (2012), Drybones Artist Collective's Costly Desires (2012), Collaboration show Chanterelle (2012), Peter Juvenon's A Colorful World at Ryan James Gallery (2013), KHDP Benefit Concert (2013), Sapience DanceCollective's Converge Dance Festival (2014), Drybones BURN & DODGE at Arts in Action (2014), Drybones & KHDP 2015 Season Preview Concert (2014), KHDP's WAIT REPEAT (2015) at Meydenbauer Theatre and Drybones Artist Collective's RESTART show to Benefit Recovery Cafe at Shoreline Community College Theatre (2015). In 2016, while on break from KHDP, Hagelin co-directed The Importance of Being Earnest with Anderlin Arts Theatre company; and upon returning from KHDP's sabbatical and after moving to the Olympic Peninsula, she choreographed and danced for KHDP's collaboration with Award Winning pianist Jennifer Thomas in her music video "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" for her holiday album December 2016 filmed at the Moore Theatre in Seattle also collaborating with Tacoma City Ballet and KHDP dancers. In 2017, she produced KHDP's EXPOSURE 2017 show along with choreographers Megan Becker, Rachel Gonsalves and Victoria Gutierrez. In 2018 Hagelin toured Virulent Demolition 2018/2019 with Katy Hagelin Dance Project at #OneOf Arts Festival, City Opera Ballet at BAM Arts Fair at Bellevue Square and won a 4Culture grant status for her choreography working under City Opera Ballet; Hagelin also presented Virulent Demolition in KHDP show #colorMAD 2019. In 2019, Hagelin and Victoria Gutierrez co-directed and produced KHDP’s #colorMAD show at Ryan James Fine Arts Gallery. After getting married in May of 2019, Hagelin also danced and choreographed for City Opera Ballet presenting works in the BAM Arts Fair at Bellevue Square July 2019.

During 2020, Hagelin created films including “Dancers in Quarantine” and “Within A Dream” with company members. This is when the idea for STRAWBYR Films began to be created. In 2021 Hagelin took up modeling for world renown photographer Marina Shipova and for Peninsula College and was featured on the front cover of magazines such as Swanky Spellbound in London in Marina Shipova’s “Tea Time” series and made it into other high fashion magazines and galleries in Cyprus and around the world. Meanwhile she was dancing in her own home studio (still quarantined in a sense). 2021 and onward, Hagelin began to work under her married name Katy Nelson. In 2022, Nelson worked with The Ballet Workshop in Port Angeles, learning KMC Workshops, Paris Opera Ballet and training in CPYB school dance curriculum under Artistic Director Kate Robbins. In November 2022 she was featured in Ballet Workshop’s local Nutcracker commercial playing The Sugar Plum Fairy “Sugar Plummy.” She was involved in their 2022-2023 Season playing acting roles in Nutcracker 2022 and Coppelia 2023. She also was able to start working with The Ballet Workshop in collaboration with STRAWBYR Films to create artistic promo and social media reels. In the summer of 2023, Nelson was able to guest teach summer master classes for Reflections School of Dance and the Sylvia Joyce Wanner School.

In 2023, Nelson filmed with and starred in world renown pianist Jennifer Thomas’s film ‘UNDERWATER CARNIVAL RIDE’ released June 6th, 2024, which won the 2024 Cannes Independent Film Shorts Award, was officially selected and voted ‘Winner’ in the 2024 Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival and won the 2024 Castle Films & Media Award in Italy. In 2023 she premiered her new company with two branches: STRAWBYR Films and strawbyr ballet boutique. Starting Fall of 2023, Nelson began to teach officially on staff as Senior Faculty for the Sylvia Joyce Wanner School [former: The Ballet Workshop] and the Port Angeles City Ballet. She was involved in helping stage and rehearse SJW/PACB dancers for Nutcracker 2023 and Don Quixote 2024. Nelson taught SJW ballet students primarily in the Elementary and Advanced curriculum and taught her own private lessons for students at the school.

Currently, Ms. Nelson continues to work on staff at the Port Angeles City Ballet and Sylvia Joyce Wanner School teaching ballet and contemporary curriculum. She also works as a freelance artist running her own companies, modeling, guest teaching, creating small films and more.

Quotes and Reviews:

“…The standout piece of the evening, however, was Katy Hagelin’s The Seed...this layered work offered intricate choreography on a cast of talented, well-trained dancers.” -Threads Weaves a Solid Evening of Dance SeattleDances

"...Hagelin wields impressive choreographic skills making her a distinct new force on the Seattle dance scene.” -Threads Weaves a Solid Evening of Dance SeattleDances

“Hagelin’s true understanding of the body and its possibilities was demonstrated through tiny, manipulative isolations, inventive floor work, and surprise endings of combinations. " -Katy Hagelin Dance Project Exercises the Imagination SeattleDances

"Hagelin’s...use of character development, spatial arrangement, and movement textures created a world of intensity clearly felt by the audience." -Katy Hagelin Dance Project Exercises the Imagination SeattleDances

"Controller, the last premiere of the evening, was another piece in which Hagelin took her audience to a fantasy world, proving her mastery of fictional landscapes and narratives...The appearance of each new game character was a real treat for the audience as the costumes were playfully bright and the movement delightfully near in quality and texture to that of a video game character..." -Katy Hagelin Dance Project Exercises the Imagination SeattleDances

"Hagelin’s dancers executed her movement with precision and passion, adding strength and beauty to her ever-creative phrase work. If you missed this past weekend’s show, look out for more performances by Katy Hagelin DanceProject as they are not to be missed.” -SeattleDances

“…With so much great dance in Seattle, it seems only fair to mention 11 alternate selections; I could make a case for any of them deserving a top spot[:] ...Katy Hagelin Dance Project (multiple performances)..." -Anne Lawrence [SeattleDances]

“…The final work of the evening, Hagelin’s Waiting Room broke the overarching grief that was present throughout the concert. The performers illustrated the time spent waiting in a doctor’s office, or perhaps, as Hagelin suggests in her program notes, ”the waiting room of the heart.” ..." -Katy Hagelin Freshens Perspective Through Technical Elegance SeattleDances

"Hagelin has a knack for threading movement that combines the fluidity of ballet, the groundedness of modern, and the sharpness of popping and locking." -Katy Hagelin Freshens Perspective Through Technical Elegance SeattleDances

"Hagelin’s fun choreography breathes fresh air into the Seattle dance scene and her beautifully technical company should not be missed in their coming shows.” -Katy Hagelin Freshens Perspective Through Technical Elegance SeattleDances

“…Deathbed, choreographed by Katy Hagelin and Jonathan Hansen, provided a visceral opportunity to enjoy technically challenging choreography. It told the story of a young man who retrospectively experienced his own death...The hero, played by Sylvain Boulet, conceived his own death from under a shroud, atop a medical examiner’s table complete with a toe tag. After a desperate solo with huge extensions and incomprehensibly long balances, Boulet flashed back to the office environment that dominated his life where he was tormented by technological isolation from his coworkers and automated routines." -SeattleDances

"Chanterelle hosted a multitude of voices, some of which spoke more clearly than others...What made the works presented by […] Hagelin and Hansen so compelling were their unambiguous intentions and technically devoted dancers.” -SeattleDances

"Hagelin said in her artistic statement that she intended to make work that people can understand––be they concerning literal or abstract ideas. In L’Actuel, she spelled out exactly the narrative she intended while skillfully combining mime and acting with technique-heavy dancing. The piece is a short story reminiscent of a full-length comedy or dramatic ballet." -A Melodious Blend of Ideas at KHDP Benefit Concert SeattleDances

"The athleticism and physicality of the movements––accentuated further by form-fitting costumes––brought to mind the image of Greek heroes training for the ancient Olympics." -A Melodious Blend of Ideas at KHDP Benefit Concert SeattleDances

“Hagelin is a young choreographer working on the border of ballet and contemporary dance, finding her own approach to the art form.” - Seattle Weekly

"The evening concluded with Hagelin’s Controller...Hagelin intensified the piece with elaborate costumes and athletic movements, with influences ranging from ballet to martial arts. In the end, her work cleverly delivered a cyclic concept that left the audience to ponder what is real and what isn’t, who is controlling whom, and just how powerless one could be without any form of control…” -A Melodious Blend of Ideas at KHDP Benefit Concert SeattleDances

“Who is the most underappreciated GREAT choreographer in the Pacific Northwest? I think it’s Katy Hagelin. I’d love to see her choreograph for Strictly Seattle next year.” -Anne Lawrence [Seattle dance reviewer]

“I’ve never been able to sit through a dance show and not have my mind wander. In this [Purple Triangle Purple Dagger] show, I was on the edge of my seat and my attention was held in every piece and every moment…” -Jennifer Porter [PNB]
